Summary

Persistence. Quetiapine is slowly degraded in the environment.

Bioaccumulation. Quetiapin has low potential for bioaccumulation.

Toxicity. Quetiapin has moderate chronic toxicity.

Risk. The use of quetiapin (sales data Sweden 2021) has been considered to result in insignificant environmental risk.

This summary information comes from Fass.

Detailed information

Fass environmental information

Fass environmental information for Seroquel Depot (quetiapin) from AstraZeneca (downloaded 2023-10-24).

Hazard

Persistence: "Based on the data available, the study passes the criteria for ‘the substance is degraded in the environment’ (DT of both systems is ≤ 32 days and <15% parent remaining at the end of the study). However, the whole system DT50s are not reported due to issues with the analytical method and the 101-day data point for the water phase in the HOM system is missing (and 1% or more of parent compound remaining in this sample would take the total amount of parent remaining above 15% for the HOM system). It is therefore considered appropriate to conservatively conclude that: ‘Quetiapine is slowly degraded in the environment’."

Bioaccumulation: Log Dow = 2.7 at pH 7.

Toxicity: There are data for 3 trophic levels, most sensitive fish (Pimephales promelas) NOEC 100 microg/L.

Risk

PEC/PNEC is based on sales data in Sweden in year 2021. PEC/PNEC = 0.033 which gives the risk insignificant.
